Centre for New Energy Technologies: Energy Data Roadmap

In 2019, Federation University’s School of Engineering, Information Technology and Physical Sciences and CeRDI completed the Energy Data Roadmap. The project aimed to better understand the availability of energy data (consumption data) in Victoria. The project was funded by the Centre for New Energy Technologies (C4NET).

Background

C4NET was established to support and capitalise on energy transformation, and to build skills, capabilities and instil innovation in Victoria's new energy technologies sector. Federation University was commissioned by C4NET to undertake research to inform data-led best practice approaches for Victoria’s energy data. The project was led by Federation University’s Associate Professor Feng Xia in collaboration with CeRDI researchers.

Outcomes

The research culminated in a final report which was informed by the desktop and research activities about new energy technologies for the sector.

Approach

Desktop research comprised a comprehensive review of current energy trends, influences, and drivers. Major initiatives in the energy, research and government sectors were identified and documented in the report. CeRDI was instrumental in data collection (surveys and interviews) from key stakeholders from the energy industry. Survey and interview data provided new insights about the energy data landscape and identified barriers and inefficiencies pertaining to energy data.

Future Directions

Opportunities for improved access to energy data were also explored through the research. Key insights have been presented and consolidated in a report for C4NET to assist in informing their work and future priorities for improvements to energy data flows in Victoria.
